The Waltzing Blossom Literacy Blog: Reflections on Teaching Reading

Updated: Dec 5, 2023

A blog for elementary teachers focused on reading research and tips for instruction.

Welcome to my blog! I'm Paula Plumer. My goal is to share reading research, instructional strategies, and quality resources to help you in your mission to teach students to read.

If you've ever wondered:

  • How can I turn reading research into effective classroom practice?

  • What exactly is the science of reading?

  • What phonics skills should be taught?

  • How can I help the struggling readers in my class?

  • How can I figure out which reading skills my students are missing?

  • Where can I find a good reading intervention?

  • Why is reading fluency so important?

  • How can I help my students develop a love of reading?

You are in the right place!

I can help you navigate the conflicting messages being sent to teachers about reading, so you can deliver the most effective instruction to your students.

Me, Myself, and I

Over the years, I have worked as an elementary general education teacher, a reading specialist, a Title 1 teacher, and a reading interventionist. By staying in the trenches, I've been able to explore which approaches work for most kids and which ones are not very effective or too difficult to implement in a real classroom setting.

I want to warn you now though, it's not one-size-fits-all. To reach success, some students will just plain need more support! That's because our human brains are not naturally "wired" to read; each of us must develop this ability over time, making it especially challenging for teachers.

Having completed my elementary teaching career after 38 years, I'd like to share some of the discoveries I've made along the way in hopes of making your job easier. Each month on this blog, I will write about one important topic related to reading instruction.

Do you have a question about teaching reading? Write it in the comments section or use the contact form to reach out to me privately. I'd love to hear from you!
